Despite the importance of river nutrient retention in regulating downstream water quality and the potential alterations to nutrient fluxes associated with climate‐induced changes in Arctic hydrology, current understanding of nutrient cycling in Arctic river systems is limited. This study adopted an experimental approach to quantify conceptual water source contributions (meltwater, groundwater), environmental conditions and uptake of NO3?, NH4+, PO43? and acetate at 12 headwater rivers in Svalbard and so determine the role of changing hydrology on nutrient uptake in these Arctic river systems. Most rivers exhibited low demand for NO3? and PO43?, but demand for NH4+ and acetate was more variable and in several rivers comparable with that measured in sub‐Arctic regions. The proportion of meltwater contributing to river flow was not significantly related to nutrient uptake. However, NH4+ uptake was associated positively with algal biomass, water temperature and transient storage area, whereas acetate uptake was associated positively with more stable river channels. Mean demand for NH4+ increased when added with acetate, suggesting NH4+ retention may be facilitated by labile dissolved organic carbon availability in these rivers. Consequently, nutrient export from Arctic river systems could be influenced in future by changes in hydrological and environmental process interactions associated with forecasted climate warming. The robust output feedback stabilization problem for state-delayed systems with time-varying delays and saturating actuators is addressed here. The systems considered are continuous-time, with parametric uncertainties entering all the matrices in the system representation. A saturating control law is designed and a region of initial conditions is specified within which local asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is ensured. The least conservative approach that employs the Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional is adopted to ensure stabilization. The designed controller is dependent on the time-delay and its rate of change. The controller is constructed in terms of the solution to a set of matrix inequalities.  相似文献

Given what institutional scholars have described as an inhospitable institutional climate for entrepreneurial business, why has the German biotechnology industry suddenly taken off, while in the UK, where a ''correct'' institutional architecture exists, has the industry shown signs of stagnation? To explain these trends the article develops a firm-centered approach, recognizing that firms work with institutional frameworks - often with help from public policies - to create new business strategies. The argument is developed that such processes are associated with the ''hybridization'' of business strategies at the micro level, combined with the generation of new constellations of particular institutional frameworks within relatively stable national models.  相似文献

The hypothesis was examined that organizational specificity of biodata validity results from the methods typically used to select and key items. In this study, items were initially screened for job relevance, keying was based on large samples from multiple organizations, and items were retained only if they showed validity across organizations. Cross-validation was performed on approximately 11,000 first-line supervisors in 79 organizations. The resulting validities were meta-analyzed across organizations, age levels, sex, and levels of education, supervisory experience, and company tenure. In all cases, validities were generalizable. Validities were also stable across time and did not appear to stem from measurement of knowledge, skills, or abilities acquired through job experience. Finally, these results provide additional evidence against the hypothesis of situational specificity of validities, the first large-sample evidence in a noncognitive domain. The recent introduction of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) single-phase Written Pole soft-start motor may open new possibilities and marketing opportunities for rural electric cooperatives. The new single-phase high-efficiency AC motor technology promises soft-start capabilities that allow designs and application of up to 60 hp 240 V motors. This paper summarizes some of the technical aspects of the new single-phase motor technology. An actual field test and application of a Written Pole motor is also be used to compare motor starting currents and line flicker with manufacturer's literature and specifications  相似文献

In this study the rational design, synthesis, and anticancer activity of quinoline‐derived trifluoromethyl alcohols were evaluated. Members of this novel class of trifluoromethyl alcohols were identified as potent growth inhibitors in a zebrafish embryo model. Synthesis of these compounds was carried out with an sp3‐C?H functionalization strategy of methyl quinolines with trifluoromethyl ketones. A zebrafish embryo model was also used to explore the toxicity of ethyl 4,4,4‐trifluoro‐3‐hydroxy‐3‐(quinolin‐2‐ylmethyl)butanoate ( 1 ), 2‐benzyl‐1,1,1‐trifluoro‐3‐(quinolin‐2‐yl)propan‐2‐ol ( 2 ), and trifluoro‐3‐(isoquinolin‐1‐yl)‐2‐(thiophen‐2‐yl)propan‐2‐ol ( 3 ). Compounds 2 and 3 were found to be more toxic than compound 1 ; apoptotic staining assays indicated that compound 3 causes increased cell death. In vitro cell proliferation assays showed that compound 2 , with an LC50 value of 14.14 μm , has more potent anticancer activity than cisplatin. This novel class of inhibitors provides a new direction in the discovery of effective anticancer agents.  相似文献

Fragment‐based lead discovery is gaining momentum in drug development. Typically, a hierarchical cascade of several screening techniques is consulted to identify fragment hits which are then analyzed by crystallography. Because crystal structures with bound fragments are essential for the subsequent hit‐to‐lead‐to‐drug optimization, the screening process should distinguish reliably between binders and non‐binders. We therefore investigated whether different screening methods would reveal similar collections of putative binders. First we used a biochemical assay to identify fragments that bind to endothiapepsin, a surrogate for disease‐relevant aspartic proteases. In a comprehensive screening approach, we then evaluated our 361‐entry library by using a reporter‐displacement assay, saturation‐transfer difference NMR, native mass spectrometry, thermophoresis, and a thermal shift assay. While the combined results of these screening methods retrieve 10 of the 11 crystal structures originally predicted by the biochemical assay, the mutual overlap of individual hit lists is surprisingly low, highlighting that each technique operates on different biophysical principles and conditions.  相似文献

Pipelined Krylov methods seek to ameliorate the latency due to inner products necessary for projection by overlapping it with the computation associated with sparse matrix‐vector multiplication. We clarify a folk theorem that this can only result in a speedup of 2× over the naive implementation. Examining many repeated runs, we show that stochastic noise also contributes to the latency, and we model this using an analytical probability distribution. Carbamoyl fluorides are formed in reactions of hydroxylamines with difluorocarbene generated from sodium bromodifluoroacetate as readily available and non‐toxic carbene precursor. The process shows a high functional group tolerance, and the reaction path has been rationalized by computational calculations.
